Joseph Brompton Cross Christmas London Shopping Guide

Outside Joseph on Draycott Avenue, Brompton Cross

This is a Sponsored Post in association with Brompton Cross.

The beautiful Michelin House at 81 Fulham Road is one of London’s most beautiful independent landmarks. Dominating the crossroads at Brompton Cross (where the Brompton Road meets the Fulham Road, and Walton Street, Sloane Avenue, Draycott Avenue intersect.) since it opened for business on 20 January 1911, it was constructed as the first permanent UK headquarters and tyre depot for the Michelin Tyre Company Ltd.

It now acts as an anchor for one of London’s smartest shopping areas; its days as a tyre depot are long gone, and Michelin House now houses the (aptly enough) Michelin-starred restaurant Bibendum on the first floor, the Bidendum Oyster Bar and a very pretty flower stall at the ground floor entrance and, behind the Art Nouveau glories of the facade, is The Conran Shop, home of all things covetable for design and home.

I’ve been shopping around Brompton Cross for years – its position between Knightsbridge, Chelsea and South Kensington means its often on the way to places I’m visiting, and the mix of lifestyle and fashion retailers, along with some great restaurants – Daphne’s, Obica, and Aubaine amongst others, means I can always find what I need with minimum fuss and maximum pleasure. (Especially at Christmas.) It’s convenient for the tube – a few minutes from South Kensington, and a short walk from Harrods et al in shiny Knightsbridge.

There has recently been an influx of new  retailers to the area (over a dozen), and I was invited down – with Lettice – to update myself – and you on the area. (It’s very agreeable to see just how dog-friendly everyone is around the area.)

We started off with restorative coffees and green teas in the Bibendum Oyster Bar. You may remember I was there only a few weeks ago to interview the legendary Claude Bosi, the two Michelin-starred chef on his home turf for a pop-up event for La Maison Remy Martin. The Oyster Bar is just as charming during the day as it is at night, and makes an excellent pitstop, whether you are looking for a cup of tea or a light lunch.

Then I had a quick browse through the flowers at the entrance.

Conran Shop Brompton Cross London Christmas Shopping Guide

I think it’s obligatory to visit The Conran Shop if one is in the area. From the lower ground floor, which is packed with books, the most amazing kitchen shop, more presents than you could possibly imagine, and excellent china and glassware, to the ground floor with its perfect edit of design-led furniture and Christmas pop-ups you could easily spend half a day in here. I’ve always traditionally come here to buy presents for my godchildren, as it’s full of quirky and useful things that anyone from 8-80 would love.

This Christmas they have two pop up greenhouses in the Sloane Avenue entrance, full of clever gifting idea – especially for men.

I hadn’t realised that they now sell houseplants and all manner of bonsai, cacti and greenery. It also turns out that The Conran Shop stocks an excellent selection of stuffed toy sausage dogs.

There’s always time for some shoe shopping – I hadn’t realised that Charlotte Olympia had opened on Draycott Avenue and I became very involved with her delicious leg-lengthening heels.

After all that, it was time for a pick me up berry juice, packed with all sorts of reviving elixir sat the Bodyism Cafe inside the newly opened Orlebar Brown.

We window shopped outside gorgeous Andrew Martin (wonderful interior design and objets), and I pondered new jeans at Donna Ida (worth checking out for their delicious new candle too) before heading home with Lettice.
