Weather – we Londoners really do like to talk about the weather. Sometimes (most of the time) we really are interested in it, other times we are using it as a code. Maybe we can’t think of anything else to say, perhaps we need to fill in a blank space in the conversation or, sometimes, it’s because what we really want to say is: I’m scared, I’m horrified, I’m shocked but I can’t have this conversation right now because I’m going to break down, so I’m going to talk to you about the weather.
So: the weather.
London is beautiful in all climates, but these heady, hot late May and early June days are so often the best days of the summer. I’ve been walking the dogs at all hours, enjoying the warm evenings as much as the hot days. And, even, when it rains, it’s been refreshing with petrichor rising in the air afterwards.
My mother has been in town quite a lot lately, staying with my sister, and hanging out with me. One Saturday we ate at the local Cote in Camden (she wanted a steak, I had whatever was vegetarian on the menu), and the next day her dogs came to hang out in my back garden in the sunshine whilst she went to a birthday lunch party.
Later that day I dragged the dog squad up to Hampstead Heath for a brisk walk under the astonishingly blue skies.
