Sainsbury's Home china glassware 2017

I always take great pleasure in setting a lovely table – it’s what my mother always did, and I learnt to love the ritual of laying a table for guests, and making  it look appealing, whether with flowers, candles, fruit or whatever one has to hand.

Even at university I had matching china and cutlery – plain white and inexpensive, but matching nonetheless.  It was white because back then it was hard to find chic, simple tableware outside of specialist suppliers. If you wanted anything other than white you were out of luck, so I love that these days you only have to walk into your local Sainsbury’s Home department to be faced with an embarrassment of choice, at extremely wallet-friendly prices.

If you follow me on Instagram (@libertylndngirl), you’ll have seen how excited I’ve been at Sainsbury’s press previews over the last few years when faced with so much lovely homeware.

So I was thrilled when Sainsbury’s Home asked me to design what my American friends call a tabletop for Spring, focussing in the main, on their new Restoration collection.

The offer is so broad that the only things I added in were a grey linen tablecloth from my own stash, and my grandfather’s silver pint mug as it looked so great against those parrot tulips – the whole as if taken straight from a Dutch 17th Century still life.

Of course I don’t think tableware comes to life unless there’s food in and around it, so I also put together a light Spring menu, sourced, of course, from Sainsbury’s – there’s a giant one here in Camden on my doorstep.

The first course was all about the very beginnings of Spring – a plate of pea shoots, lightly steamed and still crunchy flat beans, and Tenderstem broccoli, with grilled Halloumi and toasted flaked almonds, finished with a squeeze of lemon and a grassy olive oil.

These wide pasta bowls are perfect for serving salads in too, as the curved sides make one handed eating so easy.

For the main course I wanted something warming – there is still a chill in the air, and the grocery department is still full of root vegetables.

I also love a good one pot recipe, using an oven-to-table dish, so that everyone can help themselves to seconds, thirds…and so on. This is a new recipe of mine, saute-ing leeks, onions, garlic, and mushrooms, frying off a little chilli and cinnamon, and then adding in carrots and chickpeas and cooking the whole in passata and vegetable stock until soft and melting.

I applied the same cooker-to-table principle to the side dishes, using fantastic heavy milk pans to serve homemade cauliflower rice and shredded spring greens.

Pudding – oh there’s a word to bring joy to the heart. I do love a trifle, and when I saw this lovely glass bowl – £10!, I knew it would be perfect for showing off the pretty layers of one of my favourite desserts.

It’s too early to be using berries, and plums are everywhere right now, so I made a roasted plum and almond trifle, with homemade creme patissiere, and soaking the Madeira cake bottom (I always use Sainsbury’s Madeira in my trifles as it’s just as good – if not better  – than my own) with delicious Creme de Cassis liqueur. (It’s a riff on the blackberry and apple trifle in my cookbook Friends, Food & Family.)
