Lettice by Sally muir dachshund

Lettice immortalised! Last week my sister Holly took my tiny miniature Dachshund, Lettice, down to Anthropologie in the King’s Road to have a brief portrait in pastels taken by the wonderful artist Sally Muir, whose work focuses on extraordinary portraits of dogs and puppies.

Sally is a gifted and inspiring caricaturist and painter, blessed with an almost magical ability to capture the winning characteristics and unique charms of our four-legged friends in pen, pencil, paint and paper – she has got Lettice’s somewhat supercilious, yet quizzical look down to a T – all in under thirty minutes. (See the end of this post if you are interested in a dog-trait!)

Sally’s work is the subject of Anthropologie’s current show in the gallery next to the store, having already had a very popular show back in 2013, and her reputation as artist and illustrator is growing steadily – this Autumn, for example, her paintings will be illustrating India Knight’s The Goodness of Dogs, which will be published by Penguin Books.

This time around there is an exciting new collaboration, the launch of an exclusive collection featuring Sally’s striking portraits.

This new range of plates, tea towels and platters bears images of her work, and the original pictures on which the plates are based form the body of the work exhibited in the gallery. (The plates are also available online here for £14 each.)

If you are interested in a portrait by Sally, she will be hosting a special customer event with Anthropologie on the 6th August, when customers are invited to bring their dogs to the King’s Road store for a private portrait drawn by Sally.

Exhibition Opening Times:

Monday – Saturday 10am – 7pm. Sunday 12pm – 6pm
Anthropologie, 131-141 Kings Road, London, SW3 4PW. www.anthropologie.com

Lettice arrived at Anthropologie in her special sheepskin-lined, Harris Tweed dog carrier, a gift from the lovely people at Love My Dog. It is wonderful! Lettice’s collar is the Extra Small Iphis Blue Collar by Liberty, also gifted.
