Sasha, Lettice, Carmel Allen & her daughter Josephine at the Clinique Run or Dye

It takes quite a lot to get me to even contemplate the idea of running, let alone taking part in a 5k. But when my friends at Clinique invited me join them  – and 5000 people -in their 2016 Clinique Run or Dye 5k at Penshurst Place outside Tunbridge Wells in Kent as part of their Difference Maker campaign I was so IN.

The Clinique Difference Initiative helps women build the courage to be their best selves. It’s also about making a difference in our communities, and about helping the lives of others. Some of you may know that my sister Holly has Multiple Sclerosis (MS), and battles against the disease every day of her life. We know first hand the difference we can all make in our communities by supporting each other (You can read more about the Difference Initiative, and its goals in health and education within communities here.)

Lots of people taking part in the event had a backstory that connected them intimately to the idea of Difference Making in their community. The UK’s Difference Maker Victoria Pendleton CBE, was supporting the Clinique Run or Dye partner charity, the KISS IT BETTER appeal for Great Ormond Street Children’s Hospital, as her twin brother was cared for by the Hospital when being treated for childhood cancer as a young boy.

(KISS IT BETTER was set up by former Vogue beauty editor Carmel Allen, whose daughter Josephine was treated at the hospital for Neuroblastoma – that’s Carmel and Josephine with me and Lettice at the top, some twelve years after Josephine was treated at GOSH.)

I pulled together Team LLG: Holly, Hannah, and Rachel, along with action sausages Lettice and Maisie, piled us all into a lovely big borrowed Vauxhall Astra estate car, (I needed something big and comfy enough to fit four girls, two sausages and a vast amount of luggage), and drove us down to Tunbridge Wells in Kent to begin our pre-race prep  the night before at the Hotel du Vin.

I do love a road trip: I made us all mini picnic hampers, stuffed with lentil and salmon salads, (Holly & Rach), tofu & feta (Hannah & me), plenty of KIND bars, and lots of fruit and we sang our way down to the Hotel du Vin in Tunbridge Wells, where we were staying for the night before the race.

There we all got involved in our pre-race prep.

In case you were wondering, pre-race prep consists of eating all the food and taking a very long bath.

I think Lettice may have been trying to tell me something – possibly along the lines of ‘I am staging a sit-in on my human’s running clothes. I’m pretty sure she might injure herself if she attempts to run a 5k tomorrow and then where would we be on the walkies front?’

On Sunday morning we had a healthy pre-race breakfast – lots of protein and carbs, before driving out to Penshurst Place.

Nothing could have prepared us for the colour spectacular that was going as everyone waited for the run to start. All participants were strongly encouraged to get head-to-toe covered in colour, before running, jogging, dancing or walking the 5k.

There’s a reason why Maisie is often referred to as Lazy Maisie – she took ALL the opportunities for quick naps as we waited in the throng to start.

Hannah and Rach did quite a lot of co-ordinating warm up dance moves, as music blasted out over the hyped up crowd.

Meanwhile Lettice was making all the friends as we waited to start.

They weren’t joking about the colour…

The route took us through some dazzling countryside, and we were so lucky with the weather. We had a light breeze and warm sunshine, but nothing so hit that it became unbearable.

Then we hit another dye station! My MO was to run through holding Lettice high above my head so she didn’t get sprayed. This became an invitation to pelt me everywhere below the neck with huge handfuls of dye. I was covered!

And then, suddenly, we rounded a corner, and the end was in sight. The dogs accelerated – the only thing that really gets Maisie moving is food or the prospect of a nice lie down, and even Holly did a little sprint.

And then we were nipping through the finish line!

YAY! Finished!

All we were fit for was flopping in the grass.

Lettice collapsed under the Vauxhall in the only sliver of shade it provided.

It was with great relief that we headed to the local pub, The Leicester Arms, for a pub lunch in the garden,

before driving back to London, exhausted, exhilarated, elated. Who knew making a difference could be both simultaneously rewarding and empowering?

It was such an honour to meet your sister, Holly. She’s a real Difference Maker, as are you. What a superstar!
Jojo and I had the best time. What was so wonderful was seeing so many young people help other people. There is so much good going on the world and we mustn’t forget that. I love the idea of ‘difference makers’ as it’s something we can all do – make a difference – just by smiling, helping and appreciating those around us, every day.
It was a lovely, sunny love-filled day we’ll all remember. xxx
