One of the absolute joys of being a beauty writer is having access to all sorts of beauty products to test for efficacy and with which to experiment. In fact, I think it’s fair to say that another joyous side effect is that all that experimentation has also made me much better at application, especially with eye makeup.

For years, I was a big user of the ‘stabbing generally in the direction of the eyelid’ eyeshadow application technique but access to all of the products – and lots of brilliant make-up artists, like Florrie White, who also works with Clinique, and who first did my face for a Triumph campaign five years ago – meant that I was able to raise my application game. A lot.

However, one of the things I know from readers is that eyes are the hardest to get right – and it’s not as if non-beauty editors have access to unlimited practice supplies, as I do. That’s why I’ve always been a HUGE fan of the beauty GWP  – the Gift with Purchase, because it means you get to sample new free beauty products and make-up before committing to buy.

Clinique bonus time

One of the nicest I’ve seen recently hit John Lewis beauty counters just last Thursday:  the Spring Pretty BonusTime from Clinique. It’s not just a collection of great skincare and makeup with which to experiment, it’s also a collaboration with the excellent Welsh illustrator and surface pattern designer Caroline Elizabeth Taylor.

Caroline’s designs explore the notion of ‘unseen beauty’. Taking inspiration from the hidden fields and hedgerows of Wales, her surfaces challenge the usual depictions of floral beauty.

I have to say that there is a lot to like about the loveliness of being given a new make up bag, especially a new designer bag from an exciting and upcoming illustrator.

There’s a lot more to like when you discover that the collection contains:

  • Take the Day Off Makeup Remover for Lids, Lashes, and Lips, 50ml
  • Repairwear Laser Focus Wrinkle Correcting Eye Cream, 7ml
  • Repairwear Line Smoothing SPF15 Moisturizer, 15ml
  • High Impact Mascara in Black, 3.5ml
  • Quickliner for Eyes Intense in Intense Black, 1.1g
  • Eye Shadow Quad: Shades to choose from:
Purple Lid Eye Shadow Quad (Shades: Highlights, Lowlights, Fairylights and Graphite)
Brown Lid Eye Shadow Quad (Shades: Ivory, Prop Velvet, Light Brown and Dark BrownLibertylondongirl for Clinique BonusTime

I’ve done a quick step-by-step eye make up how to do an everyday eye on ME, using the Brown Lid Quad, Quickliner and Mascara, to show how easy it is to get a defined eye.

I went from no eye makeup here:

to this, in under five minutes:

First, I made sure I had removed all my previous mascara with the Take the Day Off Makeup Remover, and prepped my skin using the Repairwear Moisturizer, and Eye Cream.

Then I took the Eye Shadow Quad,

and used the Dark Brown to gently darken my eyebrows (below), using a short brush,

and used the Prop Velvet (third along) to cover all of my lid and up over the crease to just above the orbital socket, and gently blended at the top, so that there wasn’t too harsh a line. (Above.)

The Ivory was brushed just underneath my outer brows to highlight and lift my eyes. Then I used the Light Brown in the socket only in a curving sweep, taking it out just a tiny bit beyond the lid. (Above.)

I used the excellent Quickliner, which is very precise and super easy to use, to draw a line very close to my lashes, and flicked out at the sides. I then went back and looked at my eyes with the lids fully open to make sure that I had coloured as close to the lash as possible.

A sweep of Mascara finished the look. (Be sure to put a coat on the top of your lashes, as well as the usual one from below, so that when you shut your eyes, that side is covered too.
