Sasha Wilkins for Topshop Archive

Please tell me some of you were children of the 80s who either wore, or aspired to wear, raw silk strapless cocktail dresses? To anyone who listened to Cyndi Lauper and to Madonna in the Like a Virgin days, or ever glanced at the Bystander pages in Tatler, this is the dress for you.

Part of Topshop’s new Archive Collection, I knew I had to have it the moment I flicked through the lookbook.

I was going to style it up in the photo for the 21st century, like I did with last week’s Topshop Archive playsuit but, in the end, the desire to make like an 80s starlet won out.

RayBans to the ready, huge crystal earrings dangling from lobes, strappy gold shoes in hand, we were channelling the spirit of any girl who danced barefoot ’till dawn at a college ball, throat hoarse from too many cigarettes, and hair a pouffy cloud of Elnett.

That being said, I can’t wait to wear this with a stiletto ankle boot, and a whole ton of attitude this summer.

’80s Taffeta Prom Dress by Topshop Archive, £68. Also available in pink.
Sunglasses: RayBan Wayfarers
Heels: YSL from my closet
The Archive Collection is available now, and will be available throughout TOPSHOP UK, US, International stores and TOPSHOP.COM.

TOPSHOP Archive signals the first stage of a growing collection uniquely intended to encourage TOPSHOP customers to get interactive. Shoppers will be able to contribute to future Archive collections with a social campaign, #BringThatBack, encouraging shoppers to post images across social media of their most-loved past TOPSHOP pieces for the chance to see them return to store in the new collection.

Huge thanks to Remy Millar for taking the shot, and to Topshop US for allowing me to realise my teenage dreams.

Oh yes, I most definitely was. I don’t think I would ever have looked quite as fantastic as you look in this though! 🙂

Oh yes! However I lost the love of them rather abruptly – time warp + strapless dress = embarrassing exposure of the boob variety. This was at a ball at Hurstpierpoint, my fathers old school so double the humiliation.

Amazing glamour. That smokey colour looks great on you.

Never mind the smokey colour – you are SMOKIN’!

You look great! I’ve been wanting to purchase this dress for quite sometime but don’t know what size to get… Did you have any trouble with sizing?

I’d probably go one size bigger – it was definitely very very snug on me! LLGxx
