London Collections: Men. The Mulberry Party & Esquire at Rosewood London

(Shayne & me at the Esquire party at the new Rosewood Hotel)

I’m not covering the London menswear shows this week: deadlines, project organisation and tax returns have dictated that my presence is required in my office during the day. But that doesn’t mean I can’t triple whammy some of my New Year’s Resolutions in the evenings: leave the house at least once a day, see my friends more, have a social life that involves both leaving NW1 and wearing a party frock.

So last night [cue drumroll]

Shayne and I went first to Bond Street, to a properly lovely party thrown by Mulberry to celebrate LC:M. Packed with hot dogs and hot men, and with Mark Hix’s Fish Dogs food van parked outside, and Nyetimber to drink within, a thoroughly good time was had by all.

(Me moving rapidly away, with chips in hand. Nutritional suppers are GO.)

See: I said there were hot dogs:

This is Archie:

Over in Holborn, the just opened Rosewood London was hosting Esquire’s party to launch LC:M in quite some style.

The hotel is ravishing, in all its neo-Palladian splendour, with a real sense of being somewhere that is both luxurious and spoiling. (I’m now quite annoyed that I missed the opening party.)

The Esquire do was held in the Scarfes Bar:

The cocktails were bracing: large quantities of Johnnie Walker, in this case,  Gold Label Reservewith giant ice globe ice cubes embellished with gold leaf.

Here’s Shayne, working a beautiful hand woven Cambodian silk scarf. (Each one takes a month to produce on a hand loom.)

We managed to narrowly avoid pumpkin-ing ourselves by leaving just before the stroke of midnight, hovering on the doorstep of the hotel, muttering about the weather, before launching ourselves into the hotel courtyard and the persistent rain. I didn’t realise until afterwards that the gentleman to whom I was complaining was Olympian Louis Smith.

Hurrah for leaving the house in a party frock! A major achievement and I’m not even joshing. I would have feigned extreme drunkeness and stolen that exquisite scarf.

Just gorgeous: the frock, the lady, the scarf, the gentleman, the venue. Happy New Year!
