Christmas Grotto

Yes, we are wearing antlers. And, yes, we are sitting with Father Christmas in the Harrods Toy Department Grotto. Frankly I think I have earned so many godmother points that the fact that I accidentally missed Edward’s birthday (again) this year, can be overlooked. Especially when we finished off in the Harrods Ice Cream Parlour.

I think I would be hard put to think of something more magical than taking a little boy who still believes in Santa to meet him in person.

We met one of Santa’s elves in the (mercifully short) queue for the grotto

And Edward got to tell him what he wanted for Christmas, as a kind of trial run for meeting Santa himself. After lining up, we were ushered into a long corridor, with a faintly Victorian feel. A door swung open, and we were ushered into the presence of Father Christmas. Photos aren’t allowed inside and, of course, I can’t possibly divulge the details of Edward and Father Christmas’ conversation. (He was such a nice Santa, very smiley, and patient.)

And then it was off for ice cream.

For his first visit we thought Edward should really go classic with a Knickerbocker Glory.

This was received with enthusiasm.

I was not unhappy with the Tutti Frutti Ice Cream Sundae, which Miss P and I shared.

Then we went downstairs to check out the windows, Edward clutching Sebastian, his Harrods 2013 Christmas bear.

And I went home to gaze at my Harrods iced gingerbread house, which had arrived the day before.

Miss P wrote to me afterwards, and I think she sums the whole experience up beautifully:

“Edward really was ecstatic about the whole thing. He managed to make a few rush hour commuters smile as he told everybody on the tube several times about visiting Santa and his KNICKERBOCKERGLORY, Sebastian has not left his side since (he clearly believes the H on his jacket and the embroidery on his foot to be made of real gold), he took his photo to school yesterday to show everybody, Sebastian is going in for Show and Tell today and so on. When he wakes up in the morning he sits in bed and reads Sebastian the story of Henry the Electric Van.

I think it would be fair to say that it over-delivered on all imaginable fronts.”

The Harrods Father Christmas Grotto experience is available for a £10 booking fee to Harrods Reward Card Holders only who can book in advance in September each year.  A huge thank you to the Harrods Press Office for arranging for Miss P, myself and Edward to visit and for his Sebastian Harrods bear. I paid £45 for two sundaes, a bottle of Pellegrino & 12.5% tip in the Harrods Ice Cream Parlour.

He is adorable! I was used as a lounging pillow by my niece and god-daughter this holiday while we had serious discussions about Doc Martin.
