The Post Where I Arrive in Rio & Rio Moda Discute Internacional 2013

Well, hello from Rio! I haven’t done much long haul travelling this year, compared to my normal peripatetic lifestyle, so I’m rather enjoying the change of scenery from England.

There is definite irony in the piece I wrote from Rio last summer, where I had a little bit of an existential wobble, thinking I had got a point in my life where the future wasn’t filled with the prospect of unlimited opportunities to re-visit a place. And here I am again thirteen months later…

I’ve been booked to take part in Rio Moda Discute Internacional 2013. Taking place over three days, at the Planetário da Gávea here in Rio, I am appearing on the panel Mídias Sociais na Moda or Social Media and Fashion, along with Brazilian Glamour’s Editor-in-Chief Monica Salgada.

It’s a long, long way to Tipperary…and it’s a long, long way to Rio de Janiero too…twenty hours or so door to door. I left home on Monday afternoon, flying via Frankfurt on Lufthansa, taking the red eye and arriving here at 5am on Tuesday. The time difference works in your favour, so you get a full day when you arrive; just a shame then that all you want to do is kip.

I’ve been to Rio in the British summer before, and so knew to expect their version of winter: choppy seas, rain and fog, and I wasn’t disappointed. It was so grey yesterday that I couldn’t discern where sea ended and sky started.

So I hunkered down, caught up on sleep, and worked all day.

I managed a full eight hours overnight, and today I awoke to a glorious sunrise at 0630hrs, and a breakfast of pao de quejo. I’m spending the morning working at the desk in my room, overlooking the beach. It’s a shame I can’t visit Cristo Redentor up on Corcovado today, as was my plan, because I have three work deadlines, but with a view like this from my laptop is better than a consolation prize.

If I can get enough done by lunchtime, I plan to visit healthy restaurant Gula Gula for lunch up the road in the heart of the Ipanema district, and then take some photos to fill in the gaps from my last visit to Rio for the LLG travel guide I am putting together.

Then tonight I am speaking…I’m going to try to visit Corcovado in the morning, and then I fly back late tomorrow night, on another red eye, and arrive at Heathrow at 5pm on Friday…

@Natalie: I haven’t had a chance to visit a lot of places in the city, but unlike most guides, at least I will have actually visited the places I write about! LLGxx

I think the 20 hours is worth it for the pal de quijo alone!

@nancyblackett: God I LOVE Pao de Queijo! I’m going to try to make them now I am back in London – just got to track down some tapioca flour…LLGxx

@LLG: Bags of ready-mix are staple at any of the Brasilian grocery stores dotted around London. I’m sure you can make them from scratch, but the ready-mix is what they use everywhere I’ve been in Brasil and gives the flavour and texture that you’ll associate best.

Wow – really grey and dramtic. I’ve only ever seen clear-blue sky pics of Rio before. Does the beach get busy in winter or stay as quiet as it is in your pics?

@Claire (@Kurea_San): Nope – empty! Although on my last day – Thursday last week – it was about 22C and there were a few solitary umbrellas on the beach. Mainly tho it seems to be people exercising…LLGxx
