I don’t think there’s any point in pretending that this is a subtle car. An XK120 it is not. This car could not be more LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME LOOK AT ME if it tried. And vulgar as that may be, I kind of love it. Subtlety can be over-rated, I think.
And, of course, the thing to remember, is that a car isn’t just an over style number that will go out of fashion next season, it’s a highly engineered machine, and a machine that will give you a great deal of driving pleasure.
I was invited on Thursday to HR Owen’s Lamborghini showroom in South Kensington (that’ll be the one just down the road from the Ferrari showroom) to give it a test drive around Hyde Park and around Marble Arch. If I remember the conversation went something along the lines of
Publicist: Would you like to get in the new Lamborghini Aventador Roadster when it arrives at HR Owen in August?
LLG: HELL YEAH.
So that was simple.
It’s quite extraordinary being out on the road in this car. You feel oddly insulated from the world, even though you are the most conspicuous thing on it. (It’s not just the Back from the Future styling, it’s the frankly obscene roar of the engine.)
Watching the expressions of passersby when you stop at traffic lights is hilarious. We passed one teenager with a skateboard whose jaw literally hung open. Men outside pubs break into wide mouthed grins of pure glee. Women take photos and admire its lines. And some people think you are a complete wanker. Well, you can’t win them all.
