Last Tuesday I experienced karmic payback for all the times I have made models stand around in wool coats and heavy sweaters in heatwaves, in order to grab the perfect AW shot – in the middle of summer. I am fronting an digital film campaign for Uniqlo AW13, (which breaks next Monday), and one of the pieces we were highlighting was the Ultra Light Down. After wearing it in 30C, I can indeed testify that it is extremely insulating. There were also jeans. I melted. Of course, it was all my fault, as I was styling myself for the shoot, so of course I added a scarf here, suggested jeans there…
Part of the story of my part of the campaign was to film me in my London, the parts in which I live, hang out, work and play. We used my Camden apartment as the unit base, so the team gathered there…and goodness they kept on coming. There was makeup artist Jaimee Thomas and hair stylist Bjorn Krischker, who set up in my conservatory, and the four guys in the film crew, plus Alice from Uniqlo and Liz, the account director from Modus Publicity.
I suggested Camden Lock for the first set up, and we used a terrace area by the Holiday Inn overlooking the Regent’s Canal. Yup, I am wearing flip flops, in an attempt to keep cool, as I am wearing Uniqlo jeans and Down jacket in the middle of the heatwave.
Liz is balancing herself on the railings to stay in my eyeline for the interview questions. Jaimee and Bjorn are to the right for touch-ups, and that long boom holds another camera to lock off a different angle. The guy on the left is looking after sound.
Then we moved to my local, the York & Albany, on Parkway, to shoot the next two looks. They very kindly reserved an area in the bar so we could do the second make up look, a more glamorous take for an evening look.
And then we moved downstairs to the chic newly renovated downstairs eating area to shoot look two, a black silk shirt dress.
The York & Albany kindly provided prop drinks for us from the new drinks menu: mmmm, I was very tempted to drink them, but knew I could not ad lib on film and drink.
Then upstairs for look three, a chic Uniqlo dusky blue silk shirt and Uniqlo stretch blue jeans. We were a very popular object of interest with every car and passerby. To the point where Liz had to ask a particularly persistent onlooker to politely disappear.
I was supposed to look like I was hanging out, so I had several of my tech gadgets as props. That’s my Molami headphones around my neck.
The crew from my point of view…
And then the joy of taking my cream Nicholas Kirkwood shoes off – my Sacroiliac is still playing up, and I couldn’t bend down to undo them. Poor Liz: I really don’t think untying my shoes is in her job remit.
Shoes off, we walked back to my apartment to record a final voiceover, and then we were done. Look out for our film, which breaks on Monday 29 July
