The fashion & music industries have always enjoyed a particular synergy, and one of the absolute uncontested perks of working in and around fashion is the up close access you get to extraordinary talent. It’s not uncommon to pitch up at an event or show and to discover a hot act – or just about to break one – taking to a temporary stage to play.
For example, I heard Emelie Sande sing at Tiffany’s outdoor skate party at Somerset House in December 2011, and watched Prince perform at Matthew Williamson’s SS08 show back in 2007. Today Next Big Thing Tom Odell played live at the Burberry show, and this evening I got to stand a few feet from Rita Ora, as she belted out her two most famous songs in a glorious acoustic set in front of maybe fifty people.
Rita sang How We Do (Party) & Shine Ya Light. She has a truly phenomenal voice, with a depth and range that makes it hard to believe she is just 22. It’s also almost impossible to take a bad photograph of her beautiful, expressive face. (And, believe me, taking photos of people singing and not making them look like contorted pixie-faces is tricky.) I could have listened to her for hours.
The party was held to re-launch the new Calvin Klein Jeans store on Regents Street, and Ora explained that her first fashion ad campaign was for Calvin Klein (for ckone), where she met Pixie Geldof, who was DJ-ing the party.
