Gingerbread is the business. I like American style gingerbread cake, the kind I grew up eating, and used to make from a box first of all. Also love molasses/ginger cookies. All you Americans out there, buy golden syrup instead of corn syrup. It is so much better for you. It’s also easily available now in grocery stores or if not, on line.

I made these (or some very similar) about 15 years ago and turned them into decorations for our tree. I went out on a midnight shop to Sainsbury’s and came home to find the police at my door — the burglar alarm had gone off. After some investigation it emerged that the siren had been triggered by the movement of two gingerbread angels falling off the tree (they’d gotten soft in the heat). Now I just eat them straightaway to avoid embarrassment.
