Last night I was thrilled to join MyDaily contributing editor Mary Katrantzou on a panel organised by AOL’s MyDaily to launch their new live strand, MyDaily Presents.
The idea was that Mary would suggest three friends to join her, to ensure some open thinking and a good conversational flow: so ex Showstudio Fashion Director & now LOVE magazine’s Editor Alexander Fury, myself and Melanie Rickey of Fashion Editor at Large, joined forces with MyDaily’s brilliant editor Libby Banks last night at The Hospital Club in London’s Covent Garden to discuss the bigger picture around the rise of digital, and the influence, waxing or waning of the print medium for designers and editors.
The mix worked particularly well: Mary is one of the most technologically innovative designers of her generation, using digital processes to develop her prints and move her designs forward, both Mel and I have had successful careers as print journalists and now write in the digital world, and Alex has gone the other way, by going from the groundbreaking digital world of Nick Knight’s Showstudio to edit Conde Nast’s print magazine LOVE. And, of course, both Alex & Mel sit on the BFC’s New Generation panel, helping to nurture the London Fashion Week designers of the future.
Our conversation ranged from Mel’s and my stories of researching stories using microfiches and clippings libraries pre-internet, to Mary’s development of her designs using digital. We discussed the relevance and commercial application of the pre-collections, the future for runway shows, the relevance of fashion editorial, illustration and photography, and how long form features work better in print. We touched on the importance of celebrities in the front row, the evolving role of the fashion editor from gatekeeper to curator, and our love of magazines in their every guise.
I will drill down the conversation in a later post, but for the time being, here’s MyDaily’s edit of the event.
Thank you to the great, engaged audience:
And to my fellow panellists
This is frequently the expression Alex uses when I talk to him. Although it’s less confused than this one:
And, of course a shout out to the designer of my beautiful dress, Suzannah. I had rushed straight from Ladies Day at Royal Ascot, where I was both
losing money watching the races, and commenting on Ascot fashion as a tag team with the lovely Louise Roe. for Martha Ward on Vogue TV, and for Sky One’s Ascot coverage in case anyone was wondering why I was wearing a cocktail dress to speak in. (The shoes are pink suede courts from By Larin, (who are stocked by My Wardrobe).)
