After I appeared on Lauren Laverne’s excellent BBC 6 Music show a few weeks back, Lauren came up with the utterly brilliant suggestion of doing a Hallowe’en playlist for LLG readers – and Lauren’s listeners, as I’m pretty sure there’s a massive intersection on the excellent people Venn diagram. I’m running it today (Friday 28), as I am sure lots of you will be throwing Hallowe’en parties tomorrow.

So here are Lauren’s top picks for a Hallowe’en party playlist:

There’s a Ghost in my House – The Fall
(1987s cover of R Dean Taylor’s Motown classic by moody indie legend Mark E Smith and his band)

The Witch – The Rattles
(A fabulous slice of 60’s psyche with ace horror film strings and extra cackling)

Missy Elliot – Get Ur Freak On
(Misdemeanour at her funky best. This will get everyone dancing, no matter how restrictive their fancy dress costume is!)

Don’t Fear the Reaper – Blue Oyster Cult

To the Ghosts Who Write History Books – The Low Anthem
(Haunting, atmospheric Americana. Perfect if anyone at your party manages to get a snog)

Ghost Train – Summer Camp
(A fab single from the London newlyweds’ new album Welcome to Condale, which I can’t recommend enough)

Loch Ness Monster – King Horror
(This 60’s reggae delight – which begins with a blood-curdling scream – was undoubtedly made with limited knowledge of the legendary Scottish beast, but is all the better for it)

Monster – Ladyfuzz
(Funny, freaky indie pop from a few years ago)

Scary Monsters and Super Creeps – David Bowie
(Nobody spooked in the old days like The Dame. Go, David!)

The Boogie Monster – Gnarls Barkley
(Danceable with a touch of Sesame Street this is a great tune from their debut St Elsewhere)

Ho Ho Laughing Monster – Ho Ho Laughing Monster
(A perky, retro gem featuring a giggling freak, from the excellent Wavy Gravy compilation album)

Monster Mash – Bobby “Boris” Pickett and the Crypt Kickers
(As Halloween tunes go, this may be fifty years old but it’s still the best of the bunch. Just goes to show you can’t improve on perfection!)

Happy Halloween, everyone!

I love it! I love lauren show as well so sad my dab radio is broken and I can’t listen. I’ll have to save to invest in an orla kiely one!

And one more for good luck!! – a truly terrifying Halloween song and video! x

I prefer the Bonzos’ version of Monster Mash, actually. But I’m also a ginormous nerd. Also, not a single Cramps’ songs? Shame!

Other suggestions: My Girlfriend is a Witch – October Country; Bela Lugosi’s Dead – Bauhaus; There’s a Monster in My Pants – Fred Schneider.

Just put some of these on a Spotify playlist to get through Monday deadlines. It may be Halloween but these recipes won’t sub themselves! Cue Monster Mash…
Cheers LLG x
