Having given up my lease last year, I rented a storage container in New York’s Chelsea, and gradually moved in the majority of my Manhattan possessions. Over the year I dipped in & out of New York, between California, New Jersey & trips to London, and the system has worked pretty well.
Oh apart from last spring when MMS flooded the basement where my locker is, told me it was an employee screw-up (left-on stopcock), then completely denied it a week later, & refused compensation to dry clean my clothes. Gah.
Anyway, after recovering from the trauma of discovering my Globetrotter locks had both snapped open in transit, (my possessions were saved from spilling over the baggage reclaim belt only by the luggage strap my mother insisted I use), I hefted my four cases over to the arse end of Chelsea on Wednesday night before heading to the Dominican Republic.
Pleasantly surprised to discover that I had indeed cleaned it out last November and conveniently left my summer clothes at front just in case I needed them urgently, the only problem was that the photo on the left is what I brought from London, and the photo on the right is the locker before I attempted to shove in my cases.
Basically: enough with the storage conundrums. I need to find somewhere to live stat. This living out of a suitcase thing is starting to pale after 16 months of plane, train & automobile hopping. Two of those four cases from London are filled with household stuff, and I am determined to have myself a house to put it all in within the next two months.
That’s if I can ween myself off jumping on planes to random places in the interim period.
Meanwhile, if anyone reading this in Manhattan or Brooklyn has a room, spare or otherwise, that they wld like to sub-let to me week by week from the 24th of April, do let me know…

I have a great friend who travels the world (in Honduras now for 7 weeks, then to Madrid, then Lebanon). TO is her home base and she has a serious (sometimes hilarious) relationship with her storage locker (which is somewhat bigger than yours from the looks of it, though never big enough). I recommend going up a size on the storage in addition to finding a new place to live — then you can live in small spaces without sacrificing easy access to all of your necessary things.
