Dimity SO bras from New Zealand for bigger busts

With the wide selection of bras for large cup sizes that’s now available, it’s hard to believe that it’s still tricky to find well-fitting pretty bras for small backs and large cups that aren’t akin to parachute harnesses & aren’t padded. (I’m a 32G and know of what I speak.)

All I ever wanted was something that was specifically designed for a large cup (not just sized up from a teeny bra), wasn’t white or stripper pink, was made from good materials, which didn’t rub under my arms and under the straps, and which wasn’t composed of so much fabric that you could carry your shopping home in the cups in an emergency.

Although there’s been a valiant, if not dazzling, effort in the D-J arena of late, most of the problems listed above are rife, and I am still looking for good bras. So my attention is always held by new underwear companies that just design for big breasts who sell worldwide. (The US is good on-line, but bricks & mortar stores never sell my size.)

Recently I got chatting over Twitter to a lady from new New Zealand bra line Dimity SO, who only make cup sizes D-J & who are about to launch in the UK, Australasia, America & the US. She offered to send me a couple of bras to try…fast forward & I have been wearing the coffee coloured lace set Pepper Dream and am really impressed. What you get are extremely pretty bras with no whiff of the harness.

It’s not a huge surprise, as Dimity SO is the new line from Bendon, the lingerie manufacturer who produce the really fabulous Elle Macpherson line. I met with Bendon’s superstar fitter Emma Chapman at their UK headquarters who checked the fit of my Pepper Dream stretch lace balconette bra, & pronounced it correct. I’m thrilled: it’s extremely comfortable & looks fabulous.

Unlike many larger cupped bras which often are cut really high under the arms in a misguided attempt at providing extra support, Dimity SO have thought carefully about how their bras fit the body. So instead of the more usual wide band running from the top of the cups round the back, the band has been carefully angled down under the armpit to become narrower as it meets the clasp. This is important because lace rubs sensitive underarm skin and it can become really sore.

They understand that a large breasted woman knows that a true balconette bra can’t be the most supportive style on the market, and haven’t tried to bulk up their styles with thicker straps or more material. Yet they still feel secure.

Of course it’s important to understand that we all have different shaped breasts so  different bras work on different bodies. I road-tested the Pepper Dream strapless moulded cup bra which was a disaster: if you have quite a high bosom strapless bras from any label are a non-starter as you end up with the dreaded squished quadruple boob effect. Equally if you are quite low slung, then the Dimity SO strapless bra would hold the answer to a maiden’s prayer.

Best of all, Dimity SO’s bras are pretty, pretty in a these-look-like-lingerie-not-holsters-for-carrying-Posetta-Baddog kind of  way. They are made of stretch lace, ridged tulles, satin edging, pleated tulles, guipure lace, mesh, stretch satin, tricot mesh, two-toned lace, and vintage floral prints. They look and feel expensive, whilst still not breaking the bank in the £30 area. Anyway, frankly I’d rather have one Dimity SO bra than 3 x £10 scratchy lace specials from M&S.

Thanks for the review. Have you tried Made By Niki (also avail on Figleaves in larger sizes)? I’m very curious to know about the fit for small back/large breasts (which is my shape also).

This is the nicest most complete review/post on lingerie ever. Brilliant …
I do not understand why a strapless bra insists on being a padded lump. There is a place in Los Angeles with deliciously tawdry windows, Trashy Lingerie. There’s racks of ready to wear lingerie from bridal to tart to those special moments, hmmmm. Best of all, they do custom including strapless things. I’ve somehow had better luck with strapless merry widows, so pretty. The bras don’t always stay in place as well.

Love the new format. Hope all is easy for you with lil sis and all good thoughts.

Praise Dimity SO!
I tend to fit between an Aus 10–12 E and while Elle MacPherson fits me perfectly in 9/10 bras, those 10 bras tend to be the most boring in the entire range that are made in the larger cup sizes. It’s about time more people made bras that FIT WELL for larger cup sizes without assuming that we’re all grandmas. I’m 24, not overweight (as the general misconception about larger boobs seems to be) and am told by most people who know my bra size that I don’t look ‘that big’…but women like us are so often forced to wear crap underwear, or sometimes beautiful, but ill-fitting underwear. Just because a brand claims to make larger cup sizes, does not mean that they are cut to fit such women. Instead they assume that scaling up an A cup will do the trick — it doesn’t.

Thanks for bringing Dimity SO to the spotlight. I recently bought the floral moulded bra and it’s stunning and FITS! Woo!

Oo, thanks for this post, I’m in the same small back, big cup size boat and thus always on the lookout for pretty, well-fitting bras. Will def keep my eyes open for this line!

That’s brilliant news! 34E causes similar probs and have found really only Lejaby to be a good fit. Will order one of these straight away. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you so much for this article! A nasty shoulder accident four years ago has left me wearing strapless bras for the rest of my life, and finding them for bigger busts is a veritable nightmare! It is hard enough to feel pretty, especially when you are being swallowed by what one can only assume is the off cut of material the designers couldn’t be bothered with.

So, thank you for this, I will definitely be trying out DimtySO!

Ooo thank you for this LLG! I’m always at a loss of where to buy decent bras for my ample bosom! Personally I can’t stand brands like Bravissimo who try their best bless them, but the bras are always oddly shaped with straps wider than most of my belts! I’ll definitely be checking these out.

@Ritzicortez: not a huge Bravissimo fan either. I think Figleaves is sexier… LLGxx
@hannah: I thought the Dimity SO strapless looked great! I have a freakishly high bosom which is the only reason it didn’t work on me LLGxx
@Suzanne It’s df worth a look! LLGxx

If you have not already been there (though you probably have), the greatest lingerie shop I’ve ever been in is La Petite Coquette on University Place, NYC. The staff are so, so helpful and knowledgeable. I had never in my life found a bra that fit me “just right,” but the first time I went there, I walked out with 3 perfectly fitting new bras. It was like a whole new world opened up! A truly transformative experience!

I tried out Rigby & Peller for the first time in 2008. Went in and had a fitting and they strapped me into three different bras that I’ve worn to death ever since–and they’re still in okay shape. Only drawback to R&P is the price…I think one of the bras (the most basic one for under t-shirts) was upwards of £80. But seriously, got me hooked. (Also, helped me discover that I am a 32 to 34 D or DD, a size I never would have put myself in on my own. Was always going for the 36s and 38s, and generally C cups.)

I also like Wacoal (sp?) in the States a lot. It’s a deparment store brand but every bra I’ve bought has lasted and is not Titanic looking. (i.e., generally nice looking bras.)

I think I just saw Dimity in Grazia too so will have to check these out.

Hi there, I’m of the more fried-eggs-on-a-plate type of breasted woman but I just wanted to thank you for featuring an NZ brand. I moved to NZ a couple of years ago and, whilst a lot of the shopping leaves much to be desired (a welcome break for my wallet), the standard of lingerie available is very high indeed.

@caroline I know I have readers all ovr the world, so I do try not to be too focused on one place… LLGxx
@krista I had that transformational R&P experience about ten years ago too!
@annemarie I know where it is — I shall visit now!

Sorry! Have only just managed to wrestle the laptop of it’s owner. Don’t know what happened there, technical incompetence and a fake i phone probably. I am sure you have moved on from bras, but just in case…Do you really buy M&S bras? I expect now you will only be in Bendon, but in the past, did you buy from Marks? I am an amateur bra expert, my speciality has always been fitting and big busts, small bands, and I am always interested in why women buy from M&S. I have never thought much of their bras (to say the least) and after an Underwear Study day at the V&A, where they were represented, have felt moved to contact their technician. So, do fashion people really wear M&S bras???

I am going back to my “back room” fashion job after two years of maternity and then sick leave, so I am using your blog as my research to be ready. Thank you, my FIF (Friend In Fashion) pointed you out to me.

@Rosemary: M&S make bras in a 32G for a tenner. Given that I am not one of the British women who only changes her bra once a month, I buy a lot of bras, & that tenner is tempting as most boulder holders are at least £30…but I always regret it in the end. They are the cheap chocolate of bras. LLGxx

Thank you. I do understand, i tend to be a 28 E or F so i end up spending about 60 pounds on each bra and doing a lot of handwashing. (added by Mobile using Mippin)

Read this post with huge excitement as I am a 36J and tend to have very little choice in the way of bras. I know a number of manufacturers including M&S have embraced “large cup sizes” but that tends to mean F & G cups. So imagine my disappointment to discover both Figleaves & John Lewis are only stocking DimitySO up to either an F or G. Really it’s beyond frustrating. I am a loyal Bravissimo shopper (having no choice) but I also find the underarm areas on most of their bras really uncomfortable. And trying to get a bit of uplift? Forget it. Every one of their balconette bras lives me with a double-boob effect. Maybe I should bite the bullet & try R&P but it’s just so expensive. Oh well, the quest continues I suppose…
