Sunset in New Jersey

Colts Neck sunset

Since I graduated from university, I've lived mostly in two of the world's biggest, most light polluted cities: London and New York. Not only does it become difficult to see the seasons change, beyond adding or subtracting layers from your wardrobe, but you forget what it's like to look at the sky.

I woke up in the middle of the night on Tuesday in the New Jersey countryside confused and alarmed. Outside my window, the trees gleamed silver, as though the garden was bathed by an alien klieg light. It was as bright as day and I could see into every corner.

It took more than a few minutes for me to work out that it was a full moon. Although I grew up in rural Kent in England, from the age of 19 I've lived in cities and I have no memory of seeing a garden lit by the moon.

It was more than disconcerting. I think of myself as a country girl at heart, for all the trappings of big city success, and to realise that I hadn't spent time anywhere in years that experienced darkness complete enough for the light shed by a full moon to register was a body blow.

Today I looked up from my desk, where I was toiling over my manuscript and saw the most beautiful purple sky as the sun set behind the leaf stripped trees. Something else you don't see in the city.

I realised yet again how fortunate I am to have such wonderful friends who have hosted me here in this ravishingly beautiful part of New Jersey whilst I have worked on my book this summer & autumn.

I leave in two weeks for England, the final stage in a year which has seen me spend time in London, the English countryside, Switzerland, San Francisco, Los Angeles - and all of California in between those cities, New York and New Jersey. I have no idea where I will be in January, but I know it will be a good place thanks, in part, to the fabulous people I have met & spent time with this year.

Hi Liz
I feel you may be making a mistake reading my blog

I think you're making a mistake to call that part of New Jersey "countryside". It's very suburban.

Mr. J and I have been drooling over the sunsets out here in BK. Granted, it's quite a bit less than pastoral around here, but there is so much more open space! How about a Brooklyn sojourn for the next leg of the American adventure?

Beautiful sunset, LLG. When I lived in rural France last year for school, I felt the same way - disconcerted and amazed at the enormity and beauty of nature (upstate NYC can be similarly beautiful).

Hilarious comment btw ;)

When you return from London maybe you'll have a chance to gey away to western Massachusetts or anywhere in Vermont - these are rural areas I think you might also like.

You're so right, I miss the stars in Scotland - living in London now the closest I get is seeing planes fly overhead with their lights flashing... Must be very exciting working on the book - looking forward to it!

Dear LLG, I was made redundant recently from my job at a lofty fashion mag and your blog cheers me up immensely - it's a great source of inspiration and entertainment. Well done. x

That's a gorgeous sunset. It's nice that you're able to appreciate the beauty of something simple after seeing so much eye candy in your work.

This feels familiar. I'm so glad you have a desk with a view.

I live in a very urban area...but with limits on bldg. height (one block over the DC-line). My apt. is in a small bldg, w/a tiny finger of a huge park running behind it & is on the top (3rd) floor. I have a similar feeling, if not the longest view (as your lovely photo shows). No one can believe it when they first come over here. Then they say, "Oh that's why you've never moved." Yes, exactly, why would I? Even if I've been gone for periods of time (also overseas), no way will I give it up.

Have a wonderful time over the holidays & the very best on your book project completion.

Beautiful sunset. Although having lived in the Kent countryside for years I'm still sometimes surprised to find myself in this beautiful surrounding, peace and quietness. Guess I'm a citygirl at heart... Sabine x

I feel the same living on Long Island, after years in London and a childhood in Hong Kong. I never realised how much I would appreciate being out of London in a slightly more rural setting - you do notice so much more.

The sunset was beautiful from here, too - yesterday and today.

Ha ha re your retort to Liz. What an amazingly pedantic comment.
Last night I pointed out Orion's belt and the Big Dipper to the children from our garden. Could never have done this from the London house. One of the consolations of Stepford.
Having said that, cannot wait to enjoy the light (and other) pollution with fellow degenerates in London upon my escape in a couple of weeks.
Be there or be square!
PS much looking forward to BOOK too. xo
